Material Science and Engineering

Program Duration

4 years

Credit Hours

132 Hours

Material Science Engineers specialize in studying and manipulating the properties of materials to innovate and improve products across various industries. Their role involves analyzing the atomic and molecular structure of materials—metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites—to understand their properties and how they can be modified or combined for specific applications. They work on developing new materials with enhanced characteristics like strength, durability, or conductivity, and on adapting existing materials for new uses. Material Science Engineers play a key role in sectors like aerospace, automotive, electronics, and biomedical devices, where the development of advanced materials can lead to groundbreaking advancements. Their expertise is also vital in addressing challenges such as sustainability and material efficiency. For example, they might be hired to do any of the following:

  • Developing new materials for high-performance applications.
  • Improving the durability and efficiency of existing materials.
  • Conducting research on sustainable and eco-friendly materials.
  • Tailoring materials for specific uses in electronics or biomedical devices.
  • Testing material properties under various conditions.
